A portion only of the leather spine remaining. Title leaf partly obscured at inner margin by additional blue paper leaves pasted down at this margin. Staining to endpapers. Binding loose. Contains very neatly drawn ink diagrams and tables. [26], 164, [15] pages. Page dimensions: 155 x 96mm. Almost illegible inscription on front endpaper:"Presented to Vic[?] McMahon by his Aff. father J. McMahon"."Travelling from one place to another a long journey through the bush. The following directions which I forgot to insert in their proper place namely at page 108 I consider of great importance [. . .] I am of course compelled to travel in a zigzag manner, and before setting out I rule my book in the following manner. Journey from A to B (Place named) commenced on the [ ] day of 1864 and completed on the [ ] day of [ ] in company with Mess. J. McMahan, J. Gallie, and George Parrott. [Table] By taking out the latitudes and departures, which should have been done at least every morning before resuming the journey, I find that I have gone 1.3894 miles too far West, and consequently must go that distance in an Easterly direction before I arrive at B and if it were possible to travel in a direct line, that course would be formed thus - By subtracting the sum of the Northings from the Total Northing."- pages 135-136."The Book had better be headed as above and 4 or 5 pages - one for each days Journey.
