Sporadic foxing. Generally very good clean examples. ; A sizable broken run of 28 issues from 1845. Volume V, Nos. 1-7, 9, 10, 12, 14-23, 25-32 (3 January 1845 - 16 December 1845). Pagination: 1-44, 47-60, 63-68, 71-140 (In total, 134 pages). [NB: Although there is no Gazette numbered as Vol. V No. 24, the pagination runs continuously from No. 14 up to No. 32, so possibly none was issued as No. 24.] Unbound. Folded sheets or occasionally single leaves. Dimensions: 333 x 210mm. Government crest engraving with lion and unicorn on each gazette. Vol. V No. 1 is signed by T. M. Hocken. Impressions from relief printing process very noticeable on versos. Fairly early examples of printing in New Zealand. No. 12 includes a lengthy report from Lieut.-Col W. Hulme on the war in the Bay of Islands, together with a list of those"killed and wounded in the action near the rebel chief Heke's camp, on the 8th May, 1845.""In obedience to Your Excellency's instructions, I prepared to attack the rebel Chiefs and to destroy their property; and as Pomare was one of the proscribed Chiefs, and his pah the most exposed to an attack, the North Star and Transports got under weigh on the morning of 29th April, and proceeded to Otuhu, but light winds delayed the vessels until midnight, at which time they anchored off Pomare's pah. // At daylight, I was much surprised to see a white flag flying in Pomare's pah, but as the Proclamation only authorized loyal Natives to shew it, I could not recognize it as an emblem of peace from a supposed rebel [.]".
